Grounded Advice: Why the Trades Deserve a Second Look

Apprentice in action
Not every student is wired for the traditional college path—and that’s not only okay, it’s a real opportunity. As both a parent and a tradesperson, I’ve seen how a career in the skilled trade offers something more than just job security. It provides purpose, pride, and the chance to build something lasting.
And right now, the demand has never been greater.
Maryland ranks among the top states facing worker shortages, with only 33 available workers for every 100 open jobs. The gap is especially wide in the skilled trades—electricians, HVAC technicians, and other hands-on professionals who keep our homes and businesses running. Nationally, the demand for electricians alone is projected to grow 11% by 2033, far outpacing many other careers.
What’s often overlooked is that the trades are no longer just about tools—they’re about technology, energy efficiency, and innovation. From wiring smart homes to maintaining solar arrays, today’s tradespeople are working on the front lines of progress. And the best part? You can learn while you earn.
Apprenticeship programs offer a direct path into this world. Students and career changers alike can receive hands-on training under licensed professionals, often while earning college credit. Local programs throughout Maryland and Virginia are doing just that—equipping apprentices with real-world skills, safety training, and industry certifications.
I’ve had the privilege of mentoring young people who’ve stepped into this field with curiosity and walked away with confidence. One apprentice recently told me, “This is the first time I’ve felt like I’m building my future with my own two hands.” That kind of impact doesn’t show up on a report card—but it lasts a lifetime.
If you’re a parent, teacher, or student wondering what’s next, I encourage you to explore the trades. Ask your school about partnerships with career and tech programs. Reach out to local contractors to see if they offer shadowing or summer work.
Because sometimes the most rewarding paths aren’t paved with student loans—they’re built with hard work, good mentors, and a willingness to learn.
