Charging Ahead: A Homeowner’s Guide to Installing an EV Charger

As electric vehicles continue to gain traction across Maryland, more homeowners are asking the same question: Should I install an EV charger at home? The short answer—if you own or plan to buy an electric vehicle—is yes. It’s one of the most practical upgrades you can make, and it might be more accessible than you think.

Most EV owners find that a Level 1 charger—the kind that plugs into a standard outlet—is just too slow. It can take more than 24 hours to fully charge some vehicles. That’s why many opt for a Level 2 charger, which uses AC (Alternating Current) power—what most homes run on—and requires a 240-volt outlet. Think of it like upgrading from a garden hose to a pressure washer—it’s faster, more efficient, and better suited for the job.

Before installing, you’ll want to check your home’s electrical panel. Older homes may need a panel upgrade to safely support the added load. A licensed electrician can assess your setup, determine if permitting is needed, and get the installation squared away in a day or two.

If you’re building a new home, Maryland is already one step ahead. As of October 1, 2023, state law requires new residential construction to include EV charging equipment or at least the wiring infrastructure to support it. It’s a sign of the times—charging at home is quickly becoming the norm, not the exception.

Now, you might wonder how a home charger stacks up against public charging stations. Here’s the difference: residential chargers are designed for overnight convenience and use AC power, while commercial stations (including the fast-charging ones you see at highway stops) often rely on DC (Direct Current) power. DC allows energy to flow in a single direction, which means vehicles can charge much faster—but the setup is more complex and expensive, requiring specialized equipment and infrastructure.

Even if you’re not ready for a new vehicle today, planning ahead can save you time and money down the road. Whether you’re thinking green, thinking ahead, or just tired of waiting in line at the public charger, a home setup puts the power in your hands—literally.
