Don’t Let Your Yard Disappear at Sunset

How thoughtful landscape lighting can help you enjoy more of the home you already love By Grant Gotlinger, Neighbor & President of Got Electric LLC

Homeowners invest a lot into the outside of their homes. Patios get built, landscaping matures, trees finally reach the size you envisioned, and outdoor seating areas become part of how the family actually uses the property. Then the sun goes down, and much of it disappears.

According to Houzz’s 2026 Outdoor Trends Study, 83% of homeowners completing outdoor renovations created lounge or seating areas, and outdoor lighting was one of the most common system upgrades. The National Association of Realtors has also ranked landscape lighting among outdoor projects associated with high homeowner satisfaction.

The opportunity is not simply to add more lights. It is to be intentional about what you want, and need, to see after dark.

Start With Where You Walk

Before highlighting a favorite tree or the stonework on your home, start with where people move. Walk from the driveway to the front door. Step off the patio. Follow the path around the house. Look for stairs, changes in grade and places where a well-lit area suddenly gives way to darkness.

The National Safety Council recommends keeping outdoor areas well-lit to help reduce fall risks. That does not mean every inch of the yard needs to be bright. It means people should be able to comfortably see where they are going.

Then Light What You Love

Next, look at what disappears after sunset. It might be a mature tree, garden wall, front façade, patio, or landscape bed that gives your property character during the day.

Professional landscape lighting uses different techniques for different purposes. Uplighting can emphasize trees and architecture, while softer downlighting can create a natural effect over patios and walkways. Layering those effects creates depth instead of treating every part of the property the same.

A simple rule I like is this: good landscape lighting should help you see the yard, not the light fixture.

More Light Is Not Always Better

A darker yard does not necessarily need brighter fixtures. Too much light can create glare, harsh bright spots and deeper shadows. Closely spaced path lights can even make a walkway resemble an airport runway.

Responsible outdoor lighting directs light where it is needed and keeps it from spilling into neighboring properties. Timers, motion sensors, and other controls can also prevent lights from operating unnecessarily. Modern LED lighting makes that easier while using substantially less energy than traditional incandescent lighting.

Know When to Bring in a Professional

There is plenty you can evaluate yourself. Identify dark areas, adjust existing timers, look for glare and consider which parts of your property you would still like to enjoy after sunset.

New permanent fixtures, underground wiring, transformers, exterior circuits or GFCI concerns require a different level of expertise. A qualified local electrician can review the property, identify where lighting would improve safety and appearance, and determine what electrical work is needed for a safe, efficient system.

Take a Walk Around Your Home at Dusk

  • Can guests clearly see the route to your door?
  • Are steps and elevation change visible?
  • Can you comfortably use your patio after dark?
  • Do favorite trees or architectural features disappear?
  • Can you see bare bulbs or experience glare?
  • Does light spill onto neighboring properties?
  • Are outdoor lights staying on unnecessarily?
  • Do fixtures flicker or show signs of moisture?

If several of these stand out, the answer may not be more light. It may be better light, placed more thoughtfully.

The goal is not to light everything. It is to make sure the parts of your property you use, and the parts you love, do not disappear when the sun goes down.
